The Assynt Highland Games have been cancelled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Organisers said they had “regretfully” taken the decision not to run the annual event at the Highland fishing village of Lochinver on Friday, August 14.

The announcement was made in a statement published on social media.

Chairman Stuart Gudgeon said he was disappointed but the safety of the wider community and spectators was paramount.

He said: “We are extremely disappointed to have to cancel our annual event, and would like to thank the community, visitors, competitors and sponsors for their understanding and continued support.

“As organisers of the annual event, it is our legal and moral obligation to look after all who assist with and attend the event, as well as the population of Assynt. The only certain way of ensuring this is to cancel the Highland Games.

“There is still work to be completed throughout the year, and the Games committee shall be planning for an even bigger event in 2021.”

Other Highland games cancelled in the north include the Tain games in July followed by the Mey games in John O’Groats, Dornoch, Helmsdale and Strathpeffer events in August.

Meanwhile, the AHG committee has pledged to continue monitoring the situation with hopes of holding festivities later in the year.
