A former fish factory will be transformed into dozens of homes in a move hoped to help keep young people in a north village.
Developersn HPG Inverness will set to work on 72 properties including three commercial units in Conon Bridge High Street, five years after the development was first proposed.
The “eyesore” site, formerly home to the fish factory in the village, will comprise 18 flats housed in three blocks, 22 two-storey houses and 12 semi-detached bungalows alongside four detached bungalows.
A total of 18 affordable homes will be included within the estate as well as three commercial units, for business, retail and a hot food outlet.
Considering the application at the first virtual meeting of the north planning committee, councillors welcomed the plans.
Councillor Margaret Paterson said: “This is a huge site. It’s been an eyesore for many, many years and residents of Conon Bridge and the surrounding area will appreciate movement.
“I don’t think we can delay this any longer.”
Councillor Donnie Mackay added: “This site has lain for a long time and it’s been an eyesore for the people of Conon Bridge.
“It will be good for the young people in the area who may be able to get a house and I hope everyone can back this.”
Councillors also rubber-stamped plans for 104 properties in Muir of Ord.
A total of 40 homes will be constructed in the first phase of the plans as developers consider solutions to combat community concerns over traffic.
Committee members also approved plans by Lochalsh Estates Ltd for 38 properties in vacant land adjacent to Auchtertyre Primary School, in Balmacara following a vote.
