Islanders have gone the extra mile to help raise more than £23,000 in support of Skye Community Response.
Organisers of the Isle of Skye Half Marathon, Skye Events, launched the Skye’s the Limit fundraising challenge during the month of June, encouraging teams of four to walk, run or cycle as many miles as they could.
The challenge was organised following the postponement of the popular annual running event, which is now scheduled to take place in October.
During the course of the month, a total of 112 teams took part in the challenge collectively raising £23,566, with Stormy Hill Stragglers from Portree being crowned the overall winner.
The family team, made up of Norman MacLeod, Donna Nicolson and their two children Dean and Hazel, covered 6827 miles across the island.
Sam Crowe, Race Organiser at Skye Events said: “On behalf of Skye Events, we would like to thank everyone who participated and donated to the local fundraiser. We hope that this challenge will encourage many to stay active and continue their fitness journey post-lockdown.”
Skye Community Response was set up to support the local community throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
Through coordinating with various volunteers and groups, the team have been providing services such as food delivery, prescription collection, social services support and home support.
Marathon sponsors The Scottish Salmon Company commended the community on their stellar efforts in banding together to lend their support.
Director Su Cox said: “A huge congratulations to the Stormyhill Stragglers and the rest of the teams on such a fantastic achievement. Well done to everyone involved, including Davy Taylor and Ewen Maclean from The Scottish Salmon Company who covered 2,138 miles over the month between them.
“It’s wonderful to see the Skye community come together to promote positive health and wellbeing during these unprecedented times. We look forward to the return of The Scottish Salmon Company Isle of Skye Half Marathon in the future.”
