An amateur Highland football team remains in good spirits despite losing 14-2 as their efforts were all in aid of raising money for a charity which helps sick children in the north.

Northern Lights United took on members of the Inverness Amateur League side AJG Parcels at Dalmore Park, Alness, yesterday to raise money for the Archie Foundation.

Alness United donated the use of their ground for free.

Northern Lights United captain Duncan Mateer, of Milton of Leys, Inverness, brushed off the heavy defeat and said the money raised made it worthwhile.

The teams hope to raise around £350 for the charity which supports sick children and their families in the north and north east.

Mr Mateer said: “Losing 14-2 was not the greatest from our point of view but it is a bit of fun and all for a good cause.

“We’re hoping to raise around £300 to £350 today and we’re happy to do our bit for local charities and try and raise a bit more every game.”

This is the second charity match United has been involved in, following their 9-1 defeat to the Highland Hospice All Starts in April in a fundraiser for the hospice.
