Abnormal load to be transported across the Highlands

Motorists on two of the Highland’s busiest roads face major disruption next week as a huge electricity transformer is moved across the region.

Scottish Hydro Electric (SHE) will transport a 132-tonne supergrid transformer (SGT) from Invergordon to Auchterawe substation in Fort Augustus on Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29.

Both the A9 Thurso-Inverness road and the A82 Inverness-Fort William road will be affected. In particular, the A82 will be affected for two hours on Sunday morning.

A number of other roads will be closed overnight to allow the transformer to be moved.

On Saturday, the transformer will leave at 8am from Invergordon Port. Along the route it will turn onto the B817 and travel down the A9 and cross the Alness bridge, the Cromarty Bridge and onto Tore roundabout.

From there it will continue onto the A832 towards Muir of Ord before turning left onto the B9169 at the Black Isle Showground, and then onto the A862 through Beauly. It will then turn onto the A831 and arrive at Beauly Quarry at about midday.

On Sunday the transformer will stay at Beauly Quarry until midnight before travelling to Fort Augustus. On the way the load will cross the Lovat Bridge and turn right onto the A833 Culnakirk Road, where a road closure will be in place. It will then turn left onto the A831 and head to Drumnadrochit where it will turn right onto the A82 south to Fort Augustus.

The route terminates at the electricity substation at Jenkins Park in Fort Augustus.
