People in Oban are to be consulted on cutting the town centre speed limit from 30mph to 20mph – and one councillors finds this quite amusing.
Marri Malloy, chairwoman of Oban Community Council, said: “No-one can drive through the town at any more than 15mph due to traffic congestion.
I would love if the cars could reach 20mph in Oban town centre. Traffic is nose-to-tail, it’s start and stop.
“There is definitely no need for a 20mph speed limit. You can never get up to speed. There is too much traffic congestion in the town centre.”
The proposal is for a 20mph limit on the A85 Oban to Perth road at George Street, the A816 Oban to Lochgilphead road at Soroba Road, and adjacent side roads in the town centre.
Residents and businesses in Oban are being given the opportunity to feed into a public consultation and give their views to representatives from Transport Scotland, Argyll and Bute Council, and Bear Scotland questions on Friday July 11 at the Caledonian Hotel, Oban from 1pm to 7pm.
The A85 proposal consultation follows the recent review carried out by Transport Scotland into road safety and speed management in towns and villages across Scottish trunk roads. The plans are part of a wider programme of measures to promote the safe and efficient use of Scotland’s roads.
Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s representative in the North West, said: “The proposed speed limit change is one of the road safety improvement measures put forward for the Oban area. We welcome the views of the community about the potential changes.
“Members of staff from Transport Scotland and Bear Scotland will be available to answer any questions or discuss any concerns people may have.”
Bear Scotland manages and maintains the A85 on behalf of Transport Scotland.
Argyll and Bute Council and Transport Scotland will work together in producing and publicising the necessary orders to bring both sets of new speed limits into place.
Should any residents be unable to attend the event they can contact Bear Scotland Ltd. by telephone 03300080513 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to register any comments or in relation to the Argyll and Bute roads email@example.com
