A foreign driver who caused a crash in a hired motor home was fined at Oban Sheriff Court today.

Nicolas Jimenez-Ruiz drove into the path of an oncoming car as he turned into a caravan site at 9pm last night.

The driver of the car got out of his vehicle and collapsed, suffering from a suspected broken rib, the court heard.

Jimenez-Ruiz, 46, from Cadiz, pleaded guilty to driving carelessly on the A828 Connel to Benderloch road at Ledaig on August 6.

He admitted failing to observe an oncoming vehicle whilst turning right, and driving into its path, causing a collision whereby both vehicles were damaged and the other driver was injured.

Sheriff Small fined him £275.

Fiscal Eoin McGinty said: “He was driving a rented motor home with his wife and two children. He went to turn right into Ledaig Caravan Site, for some reason failed to observe an oncoming vehicle and there was a collision.

“The driver of the oncoming vehicle got out of his car and then collapsed. He was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured rib.”

Solicitor Jane Thomson said Jimenez-Ruiz had hired the motor home in Manchester, where he got off a flight from Madrid, and driven to Argyll.

She said: “It was a wet evening, it was starting to get dark, he didn’t know the road, and because of some over-hanging branches, he couldn’t see as well as he should have been able to.”

Sheriff Small told the accused: “It is unfortunate that this should happen while you are on holiday.”
