A former Highland Youth Convener is the Labour candidate for the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross seat in next year’s general election.
John Erskine, 21, of Conon Bridge, was unanimously chosen at a meeting of the local Labour Party in Helmsdale, beating two other applicants.
The seat is currently held by Liberal Democrat, John Thurso.
He said: “I am delighted to have been chosen to fight for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross. For too long local people have been without a strong voice at the UK Parliament. We saw this first hand when we missed out the fuel discount scheme.”
He said he wanted to help tackle the cost of living crisis and build a local economy which encourage young people to stay in the region.
He added that he would also be making the case for retaining the union in the run up to the Scottish independence referendum.
