The conservation group responsible for Ben Nevis has appointed a programme manager to take charge of nearly £4million of projects to help protect and enhance the area.

The Nevis Partnership has announced that the new five-year post will be filled by Lizzie Cooper, who is currently project coordinator with the Cairngorms Outdoor Access Trust.

Ms Cooper, who had an early background in finance and is a qualified architect and experienced project manager, is due to start her new job on September 22.

She said: “I’m delighted to be moving to Lochaber and to the Nevis Partnership.

“I feel privileged to be entrusted with such a fantastic project in this internationally-known part of Scotland and I’m really looking forward to starting work.”

The group’s chairwoman, Patricia Jordan, said: “We are very pleased to have attracted Lizzie to the Nevis Partnership to take forward the Landscape Partnership Programme.

“This is a big project for our community – approaching £4million over five years – made possible through the support of our funders.”

The Nevis area attracts several hundred thousand visitors each year.

And the main aim of the landscape programme is to manage the unique heritage of the area and to conserve the environmental and historic heritage for present and future generations to enjoy.

The main funders for the project are the Heritage Lottery Fund, Scottish Natural Heritage, Highland Council, the John Muir Trust and Forestry Commission Scotland.
