An emergency diversion route on a landslide-prone Argyll road will remain in place until at least 2pm tomorrow.

The Old Military Road at the A83 Tarbet to Campbeltown road at the Rest and Be Thankful was put into operation today as a result of heavy rain.

The most recent and biggest landslide took place on October 28 and work has been continuing to clear the damage.

A spokesman for Argyll and Bute Council said: “The council welcomes the continued successful operation of the Old Military Road diversion, ensuring that Argyll and Bute remains open for business in spite of the most significant landslide to date, with over 2,000 tonnes of debris having fallen on to the A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful.

“The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for heavy rain in the area until Friday and geotechnical engineers continue to monitor the slope for movement during the heavy rain. It is predicted that the heaviest rain will occur overnight and into Friday morning, meaning the Old Military Road will remain in operation at least until Friday afternoon, when the weather is predicted to clear, allowing geotechnical engineers to inspect the hillside.

“The netting on the hillside is in place to manage landslips and has done so fairly effectively, with over 1,000 tonnes of debris having been caught over the past week.”
