Work is continuing on the clear up and reinstatement of a debris fence following the worst landslide yet at the Rest and Be Thankful.

A roadside barrier and temporary traffic lights will remain in place while works continue at the landslide-prone stretch of the A83 Tarbet to Campbeltown road.

The largest landslide to date took place on October 28 when 2,000 tonnes of debris came down the hill.

A spoksman for road operator Bear Scotland said: “BEAR Scotland would like to thank motorists in the area for the patience they have shown over the last two weeks in what has been the largest landslide at the Rest and be Thankful on record.”

Argyll and Bute Council officers met with representatives of Transport Scotland in Inveraray. A spokesman for the council said: “Both agreed that the Old Military Road emergency diversion route had operated very successfully, ensuring that Argyll and Bute remained open for business despite the biggest landslide on record. We will be working together towards a more sustainable long-term solution to ensure continuity of access to and from Argyll and Bute.”

It is understood that the possibility of extending the one-way convoy system Old Military Road to two-way traffic is being strongly considered.
