West of Scotland ferry disruption as high winds strike

Wind and rain is the order of the day with ferry services cancelled or disrupted throughout Argyll.

And the rest of the Highlands is also taking a battering, with a massive 108mph gust recorded at the top of Cairngorm Mountain at 9am. The resort’s mountain railway is on hold.

A host of ferry services have been disrupted and passengers are being advised to check before going to the terminals.

Anyone with a reservations on cancelled sailings are advised to make reservations on alternative sailings.

The ferry from Oban to Colonsay has been cancelled for the day, with the next sailing due to take place tomorrow as scheduled.

The morning sailings between Barra and Eriskay at 9.15am and 10.10am were cancelled. A review for the sailing at 11.10am will take place at 10.45am.

On the Barra and South Uist route, the 8.30am sailing from Oban to Lochboisdale and Castlebay was cancelled.

However operator CalMac said the 1.20pm from Lochboisdale and the 3.05pm from Castlebay to Oban on should be unaffected.

The 7.30am sailing from Tarbert-Uig was slightly delayed because of disruption to the Stornoway-Ullapool route. The service remains on amber alert and as such may be liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice.

Sailings between Fionnphort and Iona are also amber alert and could be disrupted or cancelled.

Ferries to Islay are also disrupted, with the 9.45am Port Ellen – Kennacraig sailing was cancelled.

The following additional sailings will operate on the Islay service today: 12.30 Port Askaig- Kennacraig and 3.15pm Kennacraig – Port Ellen.

On the Lewis route, the 7am sailing from Stornoway and the 10.30am from Ullapool were cancelled. A review of the weather conditions for the afternoon sailings will be made at noon.

There is also a warning that the Oban to Craignure Mull service may be disrupted.

All sailings to Noth Uist between Uig and Lochmaddy are on amber alert and as such may be liable to disruption or cancellation at short notice.

On the North Uist and Harris route the 2pm sailing from Berneray and the 3.05pm sailing from Leverburgh are liable to delay or cancellation at short notice due to adverse weather.

On the Small Isles service sailings between Mallaig and Muck are liable to disruption and possible cancellation at short notice.

A Met Office spokesman said: “A band of persistent and heavy rain will move northeast across Dumfries and Galloway, Argyll and the Borders on Friday. The rain will be accompanied by strong southeasterly winds bringing difficult driving conditions with surface water and spray on the roads. Isolated flooding from small watercourses is also possible. The strongest winds will be along the coasts with gusts of 60-65 mph in places with disruption to transport, including ferry services, likely.”
