A man suffered a broken leg when he fell in the Cairngorms while on a mountaineering course this afternoon.

Emergency services were sent to the Coire an t-Sneachda after a party from Glenmore Lodge outdoor training centre, near Aviemore, got into difficulty around 4pm.

A spokeswoman for Glenmore Lodge confirmed the group of four had experienced “an incident” while practising mountaineering skills in the area, and that two of the party had suffered non-life threatening injuries.

It is understood that one has a suspected broken leg, while the other was believed to have concussion.

The group got into difficulty in a popular climbing area close to the Cairngorm Mountain ski centre.

Members of Glenmore Lodge’s own mountain rescue team went to their aid with support from RAF Lossiemouth’s Rescue 137 helicopter.

Police helped co-ordinate the operation, while members of Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team stood by in case they were needed to assist.

The Glenmore Lodge spokeswoman said a review of the incident will be carried out by the training centre.

The corrie is a popular venue for rock and ice climbing depending on the season.

A 61-year-old woman was killed there in September last year after getting caught in a rockfall while climbing.

And in March 2014, a climber was hurled 600ft down the corrie after hurricane-force winds dislodged a block of ice.

He suffered only a minor leg injury thanks to a snowdrift which provided a soft landing at the bottom of the mountain.
