A burst water pipe at a Highland secondary school is causing havoc with senior pupils who are in the middle of sitting their prelim exams.

Kingussie High School has been closed since Wednesday for contractors to reconnect the water supply, but it will likely be closed tomorrow as they await test results to show if the system has been contaminated.

A number of exams have been affected including Higher art, chemistry and biology, as well as National Five English, physics and music.

These have been re-arranged for the end of next week.

The school’s water supply was cut off at 10.05am on Tuesday as a result of nearby dredging works taking place in the area.

Workers were called in to fix the problem and installed a temporary pipe, but the pressure was not high enough for the water to reach the school’s fourth floor.

The original pipe was repaired today but the priority now is to ensure that the water system has not been contaminated.

The families of the school’s 418 pupils have been kept updated on the ongoing situation by group call text messages and social media.

A Highland Council spokeswoman said: “It’s a case of waiting to get the results to make sure everything is okay. In light of this it has been decided the school is not likely to open tomorrow.

“The prelims have been rescheduled to the end of next week.”

A post on social media from the school read: “Apologies for the inconvenience, but unfortunately the situation is out of our control.”
