North MP Danny Alexander branded a poll predicting one of his Highland colleagues will lose his Westminster seat “nonsense” yesterday.
The research of Scottish constituencies carried out by Tory peer, Lord Ashcroft, suggested the 37.5% majority held by Charles Kennedy, who represents Ross, Skye and Lochaber, could be wiped out by the SNP in May.
The poll predicted a 21.5% swing to the nationalists in the west Highland constituency.
Mr Kennedy, a former leader of the Liberal Democrats, retained the seat in 2010 with a majority of more than 13,000 votes.
Lord Ashcroft’s poll also suggested the party would lose Sir Robert Smith’s seat in West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine.
Mr Alexander, whose own election prospects have also been questioned, insisted the Lib Dems’ support in the Highlands was still strong.
He said: “I think the pigs are flying round Lord Ashcroft’s house. I think it is total nonsense.
“We have a great record of making positive changes in the Highlands. There is a real fight on our hands but that is a battle I relish.”
