Golspie charity show-off sculpture plans

Golspie charity show-off sculpture plans

A Sutherland charity wants to erect artwork beside a local beach.

The Silver Rock Foundation in Golspie has submitted plans to Highland Council to build the feature, which will consist of three parts, including a life size statue of a reclining figure, on the land 55 yards south west of Shore car park, near the town’s Main Street.

Plans are pending consideration by the local authority.

The reclining figure would look east towards a circle of standing stones, the highest being 4ft, which will resemble old Pictish brochs found in the area. A wooden avenue, made from timber recycled from Golspie pier, will lead to the sea.

The statue would be created from local sandstone and located inside the re-landscaped enclosure formed by the walls of the former Shore Street house. The existing stonework would be conserved and unsightly paving and raised structures removed and replaced with a grassy landscape.

The foundation states that the sculpture would give access to surrounding amenities like the beach, as well as a children’s play area and picnic seating.

Anne Ford of Golspie Community Council, said: “It is a very imaginative and attractive project. And the idea of using all these local materials is very good.

“The architecture is also reflecting the history of the local area.

“We are looking forward to seeing it and for everyone to stop to enjoy it.”

The Silver Rock Foundation is a new charity which aims to give young people more confidence in the fields of art, music and sport.
