A motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital following an accident on the north’s most notorious road.

The biker is understood to have suffered head injuries in the smash on the A9 Inverness-Thurso road.

The accident happened at the notorious Cambusavie Bends between Golspie and Dornoch around 12.30pm yesterday.

The man was airlifted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness with what were described as “serious but not life-threatening injuries”.

No further details of his condition were available last night.

The busy stretch of the A9 was closed for several hours yesterday afternoon as police carried out an investigation and arranged for the damaged bike to be recovered.

Motorists were diverted through Embo.

No other vehicle is thought to have been involved.

Last night a police spokeswoman said: “Emergency services were called to a one-vehicle road traffic collision involving a motorbike on the A9 at the Cambusavie Bends.

“As a result of the collision, the male rider has been conveyed to Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.”

An ambulance spokeswoman added: “A male casualty was taken by air ambulance to Raigmore Hospital after being assessed at the scene.

“He is understood to be suffering from a head injury.”

The fire service was notified of the incident but was not required.

Elsewhere, an Inverness road was closed for several hours after a double decker bus hit a railway bridge.

The accident happened on the unclassified route linking Balloch with Culloden around 7.30pm on Saturday.

Nobody was injured but the road was closed for three hours while specialist officers carried out an investigation.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 101.
