Micro-brewery plans for boarded-up Beauly visitor centre

A Black Isle couple are bidding to follow their dream by opening a brewery in a former visitor centre.

Husband and wife Dan Rowe-Leete, 31, and Morenys Andrews, 37, have set up Liquid Mountain Brewing – and have now lodged plans to move into an empty unit at the former House of Beauly on Station Road, Beauly.

The couple plan to brew “experimental” beers with the aim of employing around five people over the next five years.

They also hope to cash in on the growing interest in brewing to attract tourists to the facility.

The House of Beauly was a craft and gift shop until it collapsed in 2013.

The building has since been bought by The Co-operative Group which operates a small supermarket at the site.

Two units within the complex have now been offered for lease by the group, with Liquid Mountain Brewing aiming to take one of the empty spots.

A full planning application has been lodged for the micro-brewery to Highland Council.

The plan has been around 18 months in the making after the couple decided to indulge Mr Rowe-Leete’s passion for home brewing by turning the hobby into a viable business.

The couple currently stay near Cromarty on the Black Isle but have plans to move to the Beauly area as the brewery gets up and running.

Mrs Andrews, an accountant, said that the unit was “perfect” for the specific needs of their business.

She said: “We felt like trouble makers when we were looking for a unit because we had to find somewhere with a sloping floor because of the amount of water involved.

“The unit at Beauly used to be used as a pottery so it has got a very slight slope so it’s perfect.

“Beauly is a lovely village, there’s a lot of tourists pass through and there’s a lot going on, obviously with Belladrum just past.

“It will be perfect for our vision and our principles.”
