Plans for a high quality forest resort in the foothills of the Nevis Range have moved a significant step closer.

The masterplan for proposed development near Fort William which would include a spa and 80-bedroom luxury hotel was given the backing of Lochaber Area Committee of Highland Council

The blueprint was produced by Forest Enterprise Scotland and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), who hope the development could kick-start a positive transformation around the Nevis Range.

The aim is to develop a high quality experience for a range of visitors to the area whilst ensuring all infrastructure is in keeping with the environment.

The plan makes provision for the luxury hotel, high quality forest lodges and cheaper cabins, yurts, bunkhouse or camping pods near Nevis Range snow sports area.

The scheme includes improved access off the A82 Inverness to Glasgow road, with better signage, car parking and landscaping and buildings to enhance the whole visitor experience.

Highland Council’s Lochaber Area Committee today approved the plan as guidance pending its incorporation in the West Highland and Islands Local Development Plan.

It covers 270 acres of land either side of the Aonach Mor access road in Leanachan Forest.

Ben Lennon, Forest Enterprise Scotland’s district manager for Lochaber said: “The area being proposed is fantastic and would be a big draw to all visitors who love dramatic landscapes and outdoor activities. The masterplan gives a structured way forward that is sustainable and sensitive to the environment.

“It is good to have it officially accepted as part of the planning guidance.”

Forest Enterprise Scotland and HIE will now work towards attracting private sector developers and investment to make it happen.

As part of the plan, consideration has been given to how more wildlife interpretations, hides and viewpoints could be incorporated.

Scott Dingwall, head of regional development, Lochaber Skye and Wester Ross at HIE added: “The approval of the masterplan provides further clarity as to the development potential of the area from a planning perspective, and is a key element in presenting the opportunity to the market.”

Marian Austin, managing director of Nevis Range said: “We’re absolutely delighted that the masterplan is moving forward and we look forward to working with a wide range of partners into the coming years to develop this ambitious masterplan for the wider Leanachan forest area.”
