Thousands of motorcyclists roared through the north at the weekend for the annual Thunder in the Glens event.

About 3,000 bikers arrived in Aviemore before a mass ride to Grantown on Saturday, which was watched by hundreds of local people and visitors.

Another 200 bikers took part in a Sunday ride to Cairngorm Mountain, while many more joined smaller guided tours to Culloden battlefield, Glenfarclas Distillery and Elgin Motor Museum.

Bikers from all around the world make the trip to the Macdonald Resort each year for the event, which also includes entertainment. Members of the public are also given the chance try riding a Harley.

The rally has been organised by the Dunedin Harley Owners’ Group for the past 19 years, but has become so popular that now only half of the riders taking part own Harleys.

Event coordinator George McGuire said: “It has been absolutely fantastic. The sun was shining brightly on Grantown on Saturday which made it extra special.

“The event seemed to be bigger and better than previously, the people there just seemed to be excelling themselves. They laid on catering, there were belly dancers and music.

“People taking part in the ride out commented about the friendly warm welcome they got from people in Grantown-on-Spey, as they do everywhere in the valley. ”

Huge crowds lined the streets of Aviemore on Saturday, from the centre right to the edge of the village was packed with people. It was a similar story when the motorcycles arrived in Grantown.

Mr McGuire said: “Riders are extremely delighted at the people who come out to support them on the route. Nowhere else in the world do they get that kind of reaction.

“We would like to a big thank you to all of the people in the area who support us and give us such a warm welcome.”
