The scene of Saturday afternoon's three car crash on the A835

A woman was airlifted to hospital at the weekend after a three-car crash on a busy main road.

The woman was cut free from the wreckage of her vehicle, which overturned on the A835 Inverness to Ullapool road.

One of the other vehicles crashed down an embankment in the crash, which happened near the Marybank junction at about 1pm on Saturday.

The woman was airlifted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, where she remains in a stable condition, while the driver of the other car was taken by road ambulance and later discharged.

The injured woman, in her 50s, had to be cut free by firefighters from her blue Renault Clio, after she was involved in the collision with a grey Toyota Yaris and a green Land Rover Freelander.

The other casualty, who is in their early 20s, was in the Toyota which had left the busy road and ended up down an embankment.

The two female occupants of the Land Rover, both in their early 50s, escaped without injury.

Last night a police spokesman said: “The woman who was taken to hospital remains there.

“She is in a stable condition and her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

“The driver of the car which went down the embankment was also taken to hospital and was discharged later in the day.”

A fire service spokesman confirmed that four appliances had been sent to the scene, as well as the heavy rescue unit.

Elsewhere police attended an accident on the A82 Inverness to Glasgow road after a car ran off the busy route around a mile west of the Glencoe Ski Centre on Sunday afternoon.

A police spokesman confirmed that two people had been in the car when it crashed, but they were not thought to have been seriously injured.
