VIDEO: Police issue appeal over footage showing Highland van driver had a “death wish”

This is the chilling moment a van driver almost crashed head-on into a line of cars at a blind bend on a Highland road.

Police are appealing for information following the terrifying incident on the A87 Invergarry-Kyle route. near Cluanie.

The near-miss, highlighted by road safety campaigner Scotland’s Worst Drivers, involved a blue Opel van – registration number SN05 ZRJ – attempting to overtake a car in front.

The incident was recorded on a dashboard camera and subsequently uploaded to social media.

An video shows the van pulling out on to the opposite carriageway on a right uphill bend.

Both the corner and summit are blind but the van driver continues to try to pass the car.

Then a line of three cars comes round the bend just yards ahead, and each of the drivers is forced to take drastic action to avoid a collision.

The closest oncoming car can be seen quickly steering left on to the grass verge as the van pulls back in behind the car it had been attempting to pass, avoiding a head-on collision by a matter of feet.

A second car mounts the grass verges and is forced to steer left of the car ahead to avoid crashing into the back of it.

The third car, a Mercedes, is forced to brake heavily, but does so time to stay on the road.

Remarkably, just seconds after the close shave, the van driver decides to overtake the car in front for a second time on another blind bend.

Edmund King, president of motoring organisation The AA, said: “This driver has a death wish.

“Despite forcing two cars off the road when trying to overtake on a blind corner, he repeats the atrocious driving on the next blind corner.

“This driver shouldn’t be on the road.”

Police would be like to speak to drivers who were in the area at the time of the incident around 3.30pm on Friday, September 18 and may have seen what happened.

They have urged anyone with information to contact them on 101.
