Motorists face a month of disruption as road resurfacing and replacement culvert works start next week on two busy Highland roads.

Transport Scotland is investing £140,000 to make the improvements on sections of the A86 Kingussie-Spean Bridge road at Laggan, and on the A889 General Wade’s Military Road at Dalwhinnie.

The programme of work will ensure the continued safety of the trunk road, improve the condition of the road surface and repair the routes at these sections ahead of winter.

The A86 will be fully closed to all traffic from Gaskbeg Farm to Laggan from 7am on Monday to Sunday October 18 for culvert works to take place.

During the closures an alternative diversion route will be signposted via the A86/A889 and A9 and the B9150 road through Newtonmore.

The A86 east of Cluny Mains will then close overnight from 8pm-6am from October 26 to November 6 for culvert replacements and carriageway patching. During these works there will be no closure in place on Friday or Saturday nights and resident access will be maintained.

The A889 at Dalwhinnie will then close overnight from 8pm-6am on November 6 for carriageway patching repairs, and access will be maintained for residents.

The A96 at Laggan will close again for one day from 7am-7pm on November 10 and a temporary convoy system will be put in place.

Eddie Ross, Bear Scotland’s north west unit representative, said: “This programme of essential improvements will ensure the A86 and A889 continues to provide a safe journey for road users.

“We’ve planned these works following consultation with local residents, the local authority and travel operators, and have taken steps to minimise disruption such as including night time working where possible and limiting our weekend working.
