Cars drive through a sandstorm, caused by high winds, near Elgin, Moray on October 22 2015. High winds battered the north of Scotland today, Thursday.

Strong wind has been sweeping across northern Scotland for the past two days.

The Met Office issued a yellow “be aware” warning for the first severe gale of “a quiet autumn”.

Top wind speeds of 69mph were recorded gusting in the Western Isles.

Bridges in the highlands have been restricted to high sided vehicles  and the windy weather has sent a sandstorm gusting through the air in Moray, causing hazardous driving conditions and low visibility.

Presently both the Forth Road Bridge and the Dornoch Bridge are closed to high-sided vehicles. This status is subject to change throughout the day.

National Trust property, Castle Fraser, had to close it’s estate gates to stop the risk of trees falling on visitors.

Due to the adverse sea and swell conditions the 4.45pm NorthLink Ferry  sailing from Stromness to Scrabster and the 7pm sailing Scrabster to Stromness have been cancelled.

NorthLink’s Kirkwall (Hatston Pier) may be subject to delays of up to a few hours and arrival into Lerwick may be subject to minor delays.

Due to high winds, the 3:45pm sailing from Berneray and 17:05 sailing from Leverburgh have been cancelled.

The Met office say things should begin to calm down after 6pm this evening with wind dying out throughout the night.
