The Met Office have issued a yellow warning for wind in the north of Scotland this evening, with police warning of possible delays and power cuts.

The warning is in place for the Highlands, Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland, with experts predicting gusts of up to 75mph.

The strong winds and potential heavy rain come as the second named storm in a week – Barney – sweeps across the UK.

Drivers are being warned of potential delays on the roads, while large waves may cause disruption to ferry services and some overtopping of sea defences.

A police spokesman said: “In addition to the high winds and lightning, there are warnings of large waves.

“Members of the public, businesses and communities are advised to plan ahead and prepare for possible power outages ahead of the storm.

“Where possible, secure outdoor items which could be dangerous in the wind. It is also asked that communities look out for vulnerable neighbours.”

The warning has been put in place until 23:55 tonight, while similar warnings have been put in place in a number of areas in England as Storm Barney closes in.

Barney comes in the wake of Abigail, the storm which, last week, left many homes without power and schools closed in Scotland.
