Work on the construction of two new schools and community facilities in Lochaber is due to start next week.

Highland Council on Tuesday announced that turf cutting ceremonies would be performed at sites at Lundavra Road and Ardgour Road in Fort William next Thursday.

Contractors Graham Construction will be building an 11-classroom school building at Lundavra Road to replace the existing Fort William and Upper Achintore primary schools.

And Robertson Construction Northern will start work on a new Gaelic Primary School at Ardgour Road in Caol. The school will have four classrooms, but there is room for four more classrooms if additional space is required in the future.

Both new buildings will also include community facilities.

Local people will have the opportunity to view information on the council’s programme of new primary schools for the Fort William area and for Lochaber High School at two displays next week.

These will be at Fort William Medical Centre, Camaghael, next Wednesday and at Lochaber Leisure Centre, Belford Road, the following day, both from 10am to 4pm.

Primary school plans on display will also include a joint campus building to replace Caol Primary School and a school combining the existing Fort William and Lochyside Roman Catholic Primary Schools, along with the construction of a new Caol Community Centre.

These will be built on the current Caol site and will involve the demolition of the existing community centre and school buildings.

The final phases of improvements at Lochaber High School include new kitchen and dining facilities, new main entrance and administration block, refurbishment of the assembly hall and new pitched roofs.

Meanwhile, pupils, staff, parents, and the local community are being asked to help choose names for the new school at Lundavra Road and the joint campus in Caol.

Suggestions must be returned to the schools by June 6. The names will be then shortlisted and a ballot held.

The naming of the new Gaelic Primary School will follow the formation of the school’s parent council.
