A historic building in Oban has undergone a major restoration.
The work on the Argyllshire Gathering Hall has taken 18 months to complete, to bring the building back to its former glory.
The £230,000 cost has been funded by donations from members of the Argyllshire Gathering, a social club benevolent towards piping and the Highland arts, formed 140 years ago by the well to do of Argyll and headed by the Duke of Argyll to this day.
The Argyllshire Gathering takes place each year at Oban Games.
The restoration included a total re-slating of the roof, renewal of the underlying timber structures, extensive lead works, replacement of key electrical fittings, new heating and redecoration of the interior.
Local Oban contractors, J.C. Buchanan roofing contractors and Kenny Ferguson electrical contractors, were responsible for the work.
Throughout its existence, the members of The Argyllshire Gathering have supported the upkeep of the hall.
Robin Nicholson, Senior Steward of The Argyllshire Gathering, said: “The successful completion of the refurbishment project brings the Gathering Hall back to its former glory, ensuring that this illustrious listed landmark is preserved for use by future generations.”
In addition to providing a venue for the Gathering’s own functions, including the annual Oban Ball, the renovated building will continue to be operated by Amanda McPhail as a venue for social functions of all kinds.
The wood panelled main room with its high ceiling and clan shields creates an atmospheric venue unique in Oban.
The existing Argyllshire Gathering Hall on Breadalbane Street, which replaced an original wooden structure, is a handsome sandstone building dating back to the 1880s.
Since its construction, it has been used at various times as a meeting place for the Free Church, an educational academy and was requisitioned in 1939 by the Royal Air Force.
A cocktail reception was held to mark the formal completion of the restoration.
Music was provided by pipers Alastair MacLean and Aaron Hossain, both pupils of Oban High School, tutored by Angus MacColl who have benefitted from the Gathering’s schools tuition scheme.
