Searches will continue this weekend for hillwalker Goffredo Bondanelli, who has been missing in the Highlands for three and a half weeks.

The 56-year-old German national, was last seen in Fort William on Tuesday May 3 boarding a train to Lochailort, before undertaking a 21-mile walk between Lochailort and Glenfinnan in Lochaber, with plans to return to Glenfinnan on Sunday May 8.

A police spokeswoman said: “This weekend will see further focused searches of high and low-level areas between the villages of Lochailort and Glenfinnan and specific areas between Loch Ailort and Loch Eilt, where it is believed Mr Bondanelli planned to walk and camp.

“Unfortunately Mr Bondanelli remains missing and officers would urge walkers in the area to remain vigilant and to report anything that may assist the search.”

She added that he would have been camping out on hills and Corbetts during his planned five-day walk, including Coire na Cnamha, Lochan Feith Easian, Sgurr an Utha and possibly walking on the nearby A830 Fort William to Mallaig road.

She said: “Mr Bondanelli is an experienced hillwalker and is well equipped.

“He has a green tent and dark rucksack.”

It is thought that he may have been planning to return by train from Glenfinnan to Fort William on May 8.

Mr Bondanelli is described as around 5ft 10in and of an athletic build, with dark and grey hair and possibly stubble or a light beard. He was wearing dark outdoor clothing.

Anyone who has seen a man matching this description while out walking or taking part in outdoor pursuits in the Lochaber and Argyll areas or anyone with any information that may help with the search is asked to contact police on 101.
