“To assist inquiries, officers are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident on Monday night or who thinks they can identify the man to make contact as a matter of urgency.

“Officers are carrying out dedicated patrols in the area and will be reviewing CCTV and liaising with the community.

“Anyone with information can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you wish to remain anonymous.”

Councillor Allan Henderson, Caol and Mallaig, said: “It’s not an incident that I was aware of but I have to say I am very surprised and disappointed.

“It’s a very protective community in Caol with a lot of families and grandparents and this is not the kind of thing you expect to hear of.

“It is very disappointing but that’s not to say that is a local person responsible.”

He added: “I’m sure the police will be putting all their resources into finding the person.”
