Driver took electrical items to deliver….and stole them instead

Inverness Sheriff Court

A driver from Inverness who stole a variety of goods which he was supposed to deliver was ordered yesterday to pay a total of £2,000 compensation to his employer and an exchange shop.

William Anderson, of the city’s Oldtown Road, had been employed by Capital Carriers between October and November 2015, when he committed the thefts.

The 25-year-old admitted stealing two games consoles, games, two iPads, a camcorder, a mobile phone, a camera, five pairs of shoes, books, DVDs, CDs, a tricycle, a toy mat, a jacket, a pair of boots, an electric toothbrush, a steam cleaner, two torches and chargers, a fire companion set and a quantity of power tools.

Sentence was deferred for a background report until yesterday when Sheriff Kevin Neal also ordered him to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

Defence agent Ken Ferguson said: “All the items weren’t intended to be delivered. There was a lack of security in the warehouse and he took some parcels. He would open them in a layby and abandon some of it.

“Others he took to an exchange shop and sold them.”

Sheriff Neal said: “The firm thought they had someone they could trust and he let the side down badly. I don’t want his employers or the exchange shop to be out of pocket.”

He awarded the shop £1,400 and the courier £600.
