But the American flag flying at Rosebank Primary School in Nairn is part of a school tradition to fly world flags to reflect current events to pupils.
The stars and stripes have been at full mast in the school grounds since Monday.
This week’s flag tied in with the US presidential election – and last week the Union Jack was on show to celebrate the success of the UK’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes in Rio de Janeiro. On Friday the Union Jack will be raised again for Armistice Day.
Yesterday a Highland Council spokeswoman said: “Rosebank Primary in Nairn has a tradition of flying different flags each week to reflect to their pupils what is going on in the world. Last week the school was flying the Union Jack – celebrating the success of our Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
“Since Monday they have been flying the American flag because of the presidential election this week. On Friday they will they will be flying the Union Jack again for Armistice Day. This tradition was started a long time ago and the school has built up a collection of flags.”
