Nursing students from Austria have arrived in the Highland capital to spend two weeks learning about a different healthcare system.

NHS Highland and the University of Stirling Highland campus have this week welcomed the four young women from Paracelsus University in Salzburg.

The group will have access to a combination of lectures, discussions and observations and a chance to explore research activities on the campus.

They will be meeting local nursing students and gain an insight into some of the clinical care taking place at the city’s Raigmore Hospital.

A visit to Paracelsus University has already been arranged for four students from Stirling University, one from the Highland Campus.

Irene Murray, lecturer in the faculty of Health Sciences and Sport at the University of Stirling, said: “We are encouraging the students to expand their knowledge in the field of nursing by comparing the differences and similarities between the two universities and visits to clinical areas within Raigmore have been arranged as part of their programme.”

The group will spend time in the stroke unit, Macmillan suite, pre-assessment unit, coronary care unit, emergency department and the Highland Hospice.

They also will be writing a paper during this trip which will give them a chance to investigate a particular topic of interest or to begin some additional research for their bachelor thesis.

Ms Murray added: “It is going to be quite a busy two weeks for them as their university also expects them to collect 80 hours of clinical experience. I hope they can take as much from this visit as possible but I’m also hopeful they will get to enjoy a bit of sightseeing too while they are here.”
