Another major step has been taken in the construction of the new Inverness College.

Staff have celebrated the topping out of the huge £50million building, which now dominates the skyline to the south of the city.

Student president Maria Roberts, 19, of Foyers, had the privilege of placing the last piece of roof on the structure at the Inverness Campus.

She also joined other guests on a tour of the facility, including a look at the 45ft tall entrance, where a time capsule was buried earlier this year.

The building, which will open next year, will include several lecture theatres, a drama theatre and sports facilities, as well as a dedicated space for research.

It will house about 8,500 students on more than 200 courses across nearly 30 subject areas.

Inverness College UHI principal and chief executive, Diane Rawlinson said: “It’s very exciting to see the structure taking shape and along with staff, I’ve really enjoyed watching the build progress each time I pass it on the A9. As an innovative modern development it brings the Inverness city landscape into the 21st century.

“From the rooftop we could see so many Inverness landmarks – the new Golden Bridge which connects the city with the new campus, the attractive Inverness Campus landscaping, the Kessock Bridge and the Caledonian Canal. I’m very proud that Inverness College UHI is to become the latest iconic addition to the city skyline.”

Scott Alexander, area director for Miller Construction, added: “We are delighted to have achieved this important milestone on the project. We are on schedule to deliver the new college in early summer 2015 and will then maintain the building for a period of 25 years.

“There are currently around 200 people working on the project and the numbers will increase as we continue the fit-out and commissioning phases.

“We are working closely with the college to ensure that we deliver a first class learning establishment and environment, providing significant employment and training experiences during the construction phase and beyond.”
