Fireworks, RAF flypasts and massed pipe bands will entertain thousands of people at this year’s Highland Military Tattoo.

Tickets have gone on sale for the extravaganza which will be held at Fort George from September 11-13.

As well as a mix of military and the best of traditional and contemporary Highland culture will be in the spotlight with performances from ceilidh bands, dancers and Gaelic singers.

Last year’s inaugural tattoo attracted nearly 6,000 visitors and this year seating capacity has been expanded to accommodate an audience of 2,500 each night.

And a Saturday matinee has been added to appeal to families with younger children.

Tattoo director Major General Seymour Monro said: “The first Highland Military Tattoo was a sell out and feedback demonstrated that people wanted it to continue. We are delighted to be announcing a new programme which builds on last year’s success to offer our audiences a really memorable spectacle.

“We have a superb line up of acts – many new since last year – and we are delighted to have so many young local musicians and dancers taking part. An added draw this year will be the improved catering and retail village so we’d urge people to get their tickets early and come and make an evening of it at Fort George.”

Young performers feature prominently in the programme with the Tattoo giving many young local musicians and dancers the opportunity to perform in a prestigious event in front of a large audience. The Tattoo will again be working with the Gordon and Ena Baxter Foundation to encourage young musicians throughout the Highlands and Moray.

Military history will play a central role with historical vignettes marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo and the 100th anniversary of the World War 1 Battle of Loos.

Both were battles in which many Scottish soldiers fought gallantly but many lost their lives.

Major General Monro added: ” more would be welcomed. “The Tattoo gives a huge boost to the local economy but it is not sustainable on ticket sales alone. We would be delighted if any local business would like to get involved,” he said.

All profits from the events will be donated to Armed Forces charities.
