Rock star Rod Stewart will return to the Highlands next year to perform in front of thousands of his north fans.

The Caledonian Stadium in Inverness will host the legendary singer for a second time as part of his 2016 UK tour.

The concert – on Saturday, June 18 – will be the penultimate gig on his eight-date tour and one of only two performances in Scotland.

Best known for hits such as Handbags and Gladrags, Maggie May and Rhythm of My Heart, the 70-year-old rocker last visited Inverness in July 2010.

He performed in front of about 19,000 people in a stadium that usually attracts about 4,000 to home matches.

The influx of people to the Highland capital brought a major boost to the economy, as hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs filled up.

But there was also traffic chaos as long queues formed on the routes to the venue, which is just off the main A9 Inverness-Thurso road.

The start of the concert was delayed by 40 minutes to allow fans to take their places.

Last night, Caley Thistle chairman Kenny Cameron welcomed the announcement of the veteran singer’s return.

He said: “Having the opportunity to welcome Rod back to Inverness following the huge success he was last time round is a great privilege for the club.

“Having been part of the team who brought Rod to Inverness we are all looking forward to another excellent event.”

Peter Taylor, director of concert promoters Cuff and Taylor, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Rod Stewart and his team yet again.”

He added: “The venues stretch right across the UK, giving tens of thousands of people the opportunity to see one of the best live acts in the world.

“It is great that all but two of the venues are new to Rod Stewart and we are confident there will be a lot of excitement as summer approaches.”

The singer will also perform at Kilmarnock’s Rugby Park on June 17, and play concerts in Norwich, Plymouth, Southampton, Cardiff and Hull, finishing in Carlisle.

He recently appeared before 50,000 people at London’s Hyde Park and is about to release his latest studio album, Another Country.

Tickets go on general release from 9am on October 2, but pre-sale and fan club tickets will go on sale on Wednesday at 9am.
