A man appeared in private at Inverness Sheriff Court yesterday accused of attempting to murder a police officer.

Josh Byrne, of Ireland, was detained following an incident on the A96.

The 27-year-old appeared in private on petition yesterday accused of attempting to murder a police officer by driving at them and striking them.

He also faced charges of dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident, failing to report an accident and obstructing a police drugs search.

A second man, Martin McQuilliams, 26, of no fixed address, appeared at the same court accused of obstructing a police drugs search.

Both men appeared before Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood and made no plea.

Fiscal depute Ross Carvel said they were committed for further examination and remanded in custody.

They are expected to make a second court appearance within the next eight days.

Earlier this week police issued an appeal to try to trace a third man in connection with a chase involving a BMW coupe between Kessock Avenue in Inverness and Cullernie at Balloch

He is described as about 6ft 2in, of muscular build, clean shaven, with short dark hair and a Liverpool accent.

When last seen he was wearing a light blue T-shirt and grey tracksuit bottoms.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact police on 101.
