Two Western Isles singers have been victorious in the Traditional Gold Medal.
Isabelle Bain from Back in Lewis made her triumphant return to the Mod in Glasgow after two previous attempts for the medal in recent years.
The 22-year-old Glasgow University student – who is studying for a Diploma in Legal Practice – decided to make her return with the hope of ‘third time’s the charm’.
In the traditional qualifiers in the morning, the young singer fought off competition from more than a dozen competitors to claim her place in the final.
To mark her success, she was presented with The Moray Trophy as well as coming joint first for The Donald Murray Memorial Trophy – which was presented to the competitor with the highest mark in the competition.
During the Traditional final, she sang two songs to become the recipient of the Mary Lamont Gold Medal.
She was also presented with the ladies Islander Shield and the Wright Johnston & MacKenzie Prize.
Having finally clinched the prestigious accolade, the young singer said the evening’s events still hadn’t quite sunk in.
She said: “I enjoyed winning but I was just happy that I went on stage and I remembered my words. It was nice to finally win.
“The Mod has been really good. In the Concert hall there has been a really good atmosphere and just the usual Mod buzz.”
Crisdean MacKenzie from Uig claimed his first win at the Royal National Mod after receiving the Gold Medal in the men’s Traditional final.
The freelance script supervisor, who lives in Glasgow, returned to the Mod this year to compete for the gold medal almost two decades after he last competed aged 12.
After taking to the stage of the main auditorium, the 31-year-old singer went on to claim the top prize as well as a host of other accolades.
Alongside the prestigious Mary Lamont Gold Medal he was presented with the male’s Islander Shield and Scotia Trophy for gaining the highest marks in the competition.
He said: “It’s quite a surprise. I am not quite sure what to make of it really. It’s good and what I find very nice is all home support and everyone, all their messages, its great to know that there is such community still around. It was lovely.
“I have not competed since I was 12 years old so I had been thinking about it for a while and I sing a lot in my own time and I think it might have been at Celtic Connections last year, just talking to someone in the bar, and I thought I will just go for it.”
