Oil and gas giant Equnior has confirmed that it is “responding to a suspected case” of coronavirus on board its Mariner platform in the UK North Sea.

The Norwegian firm said it has “mobilised emergency response support” and has undertaken its “isolation procedure” with the suspected infected worker.

Equinor said in a statement that the individual reported “mild symptoms” at 6:20am today.

It added that the staff member is receiving advice from the onboard medic.

Mariner A is located in the Mariner Field approximately 80 miles east of Shetland.

A spokesman for Equinor said: “Equinor can confirm that it is responding to a suspected case of COVID-19 on its Mariner A installation.

“The individual reported mild symptoms at approximately 06:20 on 11 March 2020.

“The individual is receiving advice from the onboard medic and our medical services provider is taking advice from Health Protection Scotland.

“Our main priority is to ensure the safety and welfare of all people in the Mariner Field.

“Equinor’s isolation procedure has been activated and we have mobilised emergency response support.

“We are working with the relevant authorities and agencies to assess and respond to the situation.”
