A search for a missing hillwalker on an island in the Inner Hebrides was called off after the body of a man was found in the mountains.

The 73-year-old-man had been missing overnight after setting out to walk from Kinloch Castle on the eastern side of the Isle of Rum to Harris, which is on the western side of the island.

He was last seen around lunchtime on Saturday and his body was found at around 12.30pm yesterday.

It is believed that he died following a fall on his approach to Harris.

A police spokesman said emergency services were deployed to search the southern end of the island after the man, who has not been named, failed to return from his walk.

He said: “Services, comprising Coastguard, Lochaber Mountain Rescue and police have been involved in the search operation.

“Sadly, the body of a male person has been recovered from a mountainside having apparently fallen.”

He added that the man’s next of kin had been informed.

A spokesman for Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team said: “Twelve members of the team, plus Tara the dog, led a search of Sgurr nan Gillean and Ruinsival Ridge and corries.

“Unfortunately the walker was found on the descent towards Harris having taken a fatal fall.”

A spokesman for Stornoway Coastguard said they received a call for assistance soon after 10am yesterday.

He said: “Rum Coastguard Rescue Team and the Coastguard helicopter, Rescue 100, assisted Police Scotland in searching for a missing 73-year-old male walker.

“Rum Coastguard Team located the casualty at the bottom of a ravine on Ruinsival and Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team assisted with the recovery operation.”

He added that Rescue 100 flew the mountain rescue team from Mallaig to Rum to carry out a search of the area.

After retrieving the casualty, the helicopter flew him to Fort William before returning to Rum to transport mountain rescue team members back to Mallaig.

Mallaig Coastguard Rescue Team and Mallaig Lifeboat were also called to take part in the search, but they were stood down because the man was found before they were deployed.
