Here are four stories from Lerwick Sheriff Court you may have missed this week.
1) Man banned after driving while more than three times the alcohol limit
A Shetland man who was more than three times the alcohol limit when his car left the road last year has been banned from driving for 16 months.
Neil Clubb, of Arisdale, Gardie, was also fined £600 when he appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court yesterday.
The 45-year-old admitted driving with 188 milligrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath on the A971 at Weisdale on 30 October. The legal limit is 50mg.
2) Man stole £14,000 of copper wire from oil firm
A man who admitted stealing at least £14,000 worth of copper wire from a Petrofac yard in Shetland’s north mainland will learn his fate later this month.
Shaun Hurson, of Lingapund, admitted at Lerwick Sheriff Court yesterday to stealing the metal from the Sella Ness yard on or between December 18, 2015 and February 17 last year.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said authorities knew the 25 year old had sold at least £14,000 worth of copper to a scrap merchant, but he might have taken more.
Sheriff Philip Mann called for social work reports and adjourned the case until 29 March.
3) Teenager trailed woman in car before shouting and swearing at her
A teenager from Lerwick who admitted following a woman for a “considerable distance” in his car before shouting and swearing at her will learn his punishment at the end of March.
James Bedding, of Murrayston, admitted at Lerwick Sheriff Court yesterday to pursuing the woman while she was driving her car and repeatedly flashing his headlights at her on July 22, between the A970 road from Lerwick to Scalloway to Burra.
After the woman exited her vehicle, the 18-year-old then shouted and swore at her.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the incident was “quite a serious matter” which saw Bedding “accost” the woman at her own house in the early morning.
Sheriff Philip Mann asked for social work reports to be prepared ahead of sentencing on March 29 to learn more about Bedding’s background.
4) Shetland man shouted and swore at police officers
A man from Lerwick who admitted shouting and swearing at his partner and police officers has had his sentence deferred until the end of the month.
Mark Odie, of St Sunniva Street, appeared from custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court yesterday to plead guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner and acting aggressively at an address in the town’s Sandveien on Tuesday this week.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said it was “clearly not a one-off incident” as the 44-year-old had a previous conviction for domestic assault relating to the same woman.
Sheriff Philip Mann decided to call for social work reports to be prepared and told Odie that, while it is not inevitable, jail has to be considered ahead of sentencing on March 29.
He was released on bail with special conditions prohibiting him from attending the address where the offence was carried out and approaching or contacting the victim.
