Shetland tourist found after an evening lost on the mainland

A Shetland tourist has been found safe and well after spending a night on the island’s northern mainland.

The 57-year-old, believed to be an experienced walker, left the North Roe area on Thursday night aiming for Uyea isle, in Northmavine.

She is understood to have wandered into bad weather on the way back.

She was reported missing at around 9pm on Thursday evening, prompting a huge land, sea and air search.

Shetland coastguard’s Oscar Charlie helicopter, the Aith lifeboat and coastguard teams from North Roe, Hillswick, Sullom Voe, Walls and Lerwick all joined the hunt.

It is thought the woman was in Shetland with her husband, who was there for work.

A coastguard spokeswoman said: “We believe she had gone out for a walk yesterday during the day, she’s a tourist up here and her husband was working for the day.

“The weather deteriorated when she was out for the walk and on the way back she got lost.

“On her way back she was spotted by some crofters and they pointed her in the right direction to go back on the road.”

The search was halted at 2am on Friday, before resuming at dawn.

Police found the woman around 11am.

She did not require any medical assistance.
