A man has been charged with several road traffic offences after members of the public reported having witnessed a vehicle mounting the pavement and narrowly missing pedestrians in Lerwick on Wednesday morning.
The 43-year-old from Lerwick, was apprehended and charged after several members of the public alerted police to erratic driving on the town’s South Road at around 9am.
Witnesses saw the vehicle driving in the face of oncoming traffic and driving along the pavement for a short time, just missing some pedestrians.
Police said that patrolling officers were on the scene quickly and, having received “very good descriptions” of the driver from witnesses, traced and apprehended the man.
He has been charged with offences including dangerous driving, vehicle theft and driving without a licence. A report is being prepared for the procurator fiscal.
Shetland police inspector Paul Daley said: “I would like to thank the public very much for providing a good description of the driver and for giving statements detailing the driver’s behaviour.
“This allowed your local police to quickly trace, arrest and charge the driver, who clearly caused fear and alarm to a number of people who were in the area going about their routine business.”
