The mystery of a missing German tourist in the Western Isles has deepened after an extensive search has failed to find any clues as to his whereabouts.

A major land, air and sea search has been carried out for Torsten Kulke over the past two days.

Family back home in Germany reported the 48-year-old missing, raising concerns for his wellbeing.

Western Isles Police established he travelled to Scotland and later boarded a flight to Stornoway.

After arriving at the island late on Friday afternoon, Mr Kulke hailed a taxi to take him on an hour’s journey to Uig.

He asked to be dropped off in an isolated spot on a narrow single track road midway between the villages of Eristeadh and Aird Uig at 6.30pm.

For the past two days efforts to locate the missing man have focused around this area.

It is understood that Mr Kulke did not have a tent or sleeping bag and when last seen was wearing a white top, khaki trousers, heavy walking boots and carrying a rucksack or backpack.

The Stornoway Coastguard search and rescue helicopter has also made repeated sweeps of the wider area and Uig boat operator Seatrek Cruises has explored the shoreline around the peninsula.

Search squads from Stornoway Coastguard – including Stornoway, Bragar, Breasclete and Miavaig rescue teams – as well as Hebrides Mountain Rescue are involved and more personnel were airlifted onto a mountain range behind Timsgarry as efforts continued.

Mr Kulkei is 6ft 3in and of medium build with light brown hair.

Murdo Macaulay, local commander of the UK Coastguard rescue team, said: “Since the search began, we have been unable to locate him or any of his belongings.

”We are confident we have covered the area  well, but we will see a change in the weather today with rain and different cloud cover.”

Charlie Greenwood of the Hebrides Mountain Rescue Team said:  “We are concerned about him and hope to find him as soon as possible.”
