The incident happened in the High Street area of the town.
A Western Isles man whose body was recovered from a local loch on Wednesday has been identified by police.
He was Donald Macaskill, 73, from Berneray on North Uist.
The sad discovery was made during an extensive search of the island and surrounding waters by the police and coastguard crews.
Western Isles area commander Chief Inspector Gordon MacLeod said: “Our thoughts at this difficult time are with the family and friends of Mr Macaskill.
“I would also like to thank members of the public and other services for their assistance during the search operation.
“Our inquiries are ongoing, although there does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances. A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal in due course.”
The tragedy happened during a prolonged torrential downpour that caused havoc across the Hebrides.
There were numerous landslides and road closures across a wide area of the north west Highlands and islands.
On Barra, an elderly man was rescued at 1am on Wednesday from his flooded home at Ledaig near Castlebay.
He was taken to St Brendan’s Hospital on the island. His condition is not known.
