Western Isles hospital gets gleaming report

The NHS has become a battleground in the closing stages of the referendum.

NHS Western Isles has welcomed the results of a new national healthcare report for one of its hospitals.

The latest Healthcare Environment Inspectorate (HEI) Inspection Report shows that Uist and Barra Hospital in Benbecula has achieved high standards of cleanliness and “excellent” staff communication.

It has also received positive feedback from patients, especially for being spotless.

An announced inspection visit to the 29-bed hospital took place on July 1-2, where a team examined NHS Western Isles’ self-assessment information and then inspected the hospital to validate it.

This involved meeting patients and staff, and visiting wards and departments to assess how clean the hospital was and if it was meeting national standards.

Susan Brimelow, HEI chief inspector, said: “This was a positive inspection. We found a high standard of cleanliness throughout the hospital and saw good compliance with standard infection control precautions.

“We noted excellent communication between staff groups and patients commented positively on the standards of cleanliness on their wards. This inspection resulted in no requirements and one recommendation.”

The recommendation is to develop an action plan that demonstrates how staff completion rates for mandatory healthcare associated infection education will be improved and sustained.

NHS Western Isles chief executive, Gordon Jamieson, said: “This extremely positive report is testament to the staff of Uist and Barra Hospital and their continuous efforts to ensure that the environment for patients is up to the highest possible standard.”

The HEI was set up by Healthcare Improvement Scotland to reduce healthcare associated infection risk to patients through a rigorous inspection framework.
