Volunteers are stepping up their drive to complete a £300,000 revamp of a popular Moray park.

A new pavilion, five-a-side football pitch and refreshed putting green have all been earmarked as part of the ambitious new look.

Campaigners are aiming to take ownership of Marine Park in Lossiemouth to unlock the potential of landing funding grants to pay for the work.

Carol Lennon, chairwoman of Action Marine Park, is eager to see the seaside play area thrive again.

Mrs Lennon said: “The next phase is to work with Moray Council to transfer the park to us and replace the original pavilion, which will cost at least £250,000.

“It used to be so busy with people bringing out refreshments and we would like to see a more fit-for-purpose building so other groups can use it too.

“We’ve looked at what other groups are doing – what’s working, what’s not – and we know from suggestions that we’re on the right track.”

Costs to serve up the new tennis courts were kept down to £40,000 with local firms spending days cleaning grime off the surface for no charge.

The action group has run consultations with residents to see what is needed most – attracting suggestions ranging from a BMX track to a new hall.

Mrs Lennon said: “When we started the fence around the tennis courts was rusty and falling down. The courts themselves were faded and covered in moss. They’re very busy now with the council and schools so it shows what can be done.

“There aren’t any toilets there at the moment so we have to bring in temporary ones, which aren’t really the best to make it inviting.

“We want it to be substantial enough for other groups to use so everyone benefits.”

Action Marine Park is hosting family fun day to raise money for the project at the park from noon until 4pm on Saturday.
