Couple to celebrate golden wedding anniversary by starting popular Moray fireworks display

Portgordon couple George and Veronica Thow will start the village's annual fireworks display on the same day as their golden wedding anniversary.
Portgordon couple George and Veronica Thow will start the village's annual fireworks display on the same day as their golden wedding anniversary.

A Moray couple will have some added sparkle at their golden wedding celebrations – in the shape of a spectacular fireworks display.

George and Veronica Thow have been chosen to flick the switch to start this week’s pyrotechnics extravaganza in Portgordon.

The duo ave been an integral part of the popular event since it was launched more than 20 years ago.

Special golden sections have been woven into this year’s show to pay tribute to Mr and Mrs Thow.

The coincidence of the anniversary landing on the date of the fireworks was initially a potential problem.

But Mrs Thow, 70, said: “My son-in-law does the pyrotechnics for the display.

“When the date was set he told the organisers it was unfortunate because it was our wedding anniversary, and it was our 50th.

“They decided it would be a good idea to ask us. It’s certainly something different. I never would have thought I would be asked.”

The couple have been stalwarts of the display since it began, with Mrs Thow involved in the catering and child-minding while her husband has performed countless odd-jobs.

The Thows will hold their own family get-together on Sunday.

The couple married at St Peter’s Church in Buckie – Mrs Thow’s hometown – but moved to Portgordon less than a year later.

Mr Thow, 71, said: “It’s a great privilege to be asked to start the fireworks. It’s a big thing for the village. Thousands of people come and it’s a great spectacle.”

Mrs Thow added: “They’ve changed beyond recognition from when they started.

“They were just a couple of little boxes then but it’s moved on to a beautiful 25-minute display.”

The Portgordon fireworks display will start at 7pm tomorrow.

Parking will be available in fields at Reid Terrace for a minimum donation of £1.

A limited number of disabled parking spaces will be provided at Craigenroad corner to Flicks hairdressers and at Harbourhead Close.
