Man charged with attempted murder after alleged stabbing in Moray

Police taped off houses on Victoria Street in Portknockie following reports of a stabbing.
Police taped off houses on Victoria Street in Portknockie following reports of a stabbing.

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a woman was allegedly stabbed.

Steven Cowie appeared in private at Elgin Sheriff Court yesterday to face the charge.

The 41-year-old, of Moray, is also accused with assault to severe injury, permanent injury and danger of life.

He made no plea or declaration, and the case was continued for further examination. He was remanded in custody.

His appearance comes just two days after police and ambulance crews were called to a house on Victoria Street, Portknockie.

A 45-year-old woman was injured in the disturbance, and was taken to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin for treatment.

Her injuries at the time were described by police as serious but not life-threatening.

In the hours following the incident officers taped off about six houses at Victoria Street’s junction with Patrol Street.

Police could be seen taking photographs of the road while officers went in and out of a home in the quiet fishing village to gather evidence.

Locals reported seeing a woman run from a house to seek sanctuary with a neighbour.

Police have moved to calm the fears of locals by describing the attack as an isolated and contained incident.

Keith and Cullen councillor Ron Shepherd said the incident had rocked Portknockie with residents too shocked or upset to speak following the incident.

He said: “It’s a nice place to live and certainly not what you expect. I know a lot of people have been affected by it.”
