Police warning ahead of Elgin City cup clash with Caley Thistle

Police have warned football fans to behave themselves when Elgin City take on Inverness Caledonian Thistle this weekend.

The rivalry between supporters in Moray’s biggest town and the Highland capital precedes the merger of Inverness Thistle and Caledonian FC, when all three sides competed in the Highland League.

The two Inverness clubs joined and entered the SFL’s third division in 1994, and since then meetings between Caley Thistle and Elgin have been scarce.

City followed their north counterparts into the SFL in 2000, but will welcome their old rivals to Borough Briggs for a fourth round Scottish Cup tie on Saturday.

Approximately 3,000 people are expected to attend, and both clubs are working with the police, Moray Council, and the British Transport Police to ensure the day goes smoothly.

Police promised an increased presence at the game and encouraged supporters relishing the rare fixture to “enjoy themselves responsibly”.

Inspector David Paterson said: “We are looking forward to this fixture, which will have a local derby feel to it.

“While the vast majority of supporters will enjoy the match in the right spirit, there may be a small minority who may cause disorder.

“I remind supporters that no alcohol is allowed within the stadium and anyone found to be drunk may be liable to arrest.

“Fans could be searched by police or stewards prior the match.”

City chairman Graham Tatters said there was “no animosity” between his club and the Caley Jags.

Mr Tatters added: “We have a good relationship with them, it isn’t like in the Highland League days.

“There can always be an element who want to cause trouble, and aren’t interested in the football, but police are aware of who these people are.”

Elgin City South councillor, and Black and Whites supporter, Graham Leadbitter predicted little more than “good-natured banter” between fans of the opposing sides.

He said: “This is an old rivalry and the teams haven’t met for a few years, so Elgin fans place a lot of importance on the game.”

Motorists have been warned of increased traffic and demand for parking around the ground.

Borough Briggs Road will be closed throughout Saturday afternoon between Trinity Road and Haugh Road, and there will be temporary restrictions in force on streets around the stadium.
