Pensioner faces licence loss after causing A96 scare

A pensioner who almost caused a head-on collision on Moray’s busiest road has been warned he faces losing his driving licence.

John Morrison was driving between Lhanbryde and Fochabers, on the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road, with his wife when he repeatedly drifted into the opposite carriageway.

His Ford Fusion narrowly avoided crashing into a van and two cars, and ran over the end of a crawler lane on the Fochabers bypass – which then becomes an overtaking lane in the opposite direction.

Morrison was pulled over by police after three fellow motorists said they had to swerve to avoid a collision on September 17 last year.

The 74-year-old first appeared at Elgin Sheriff Court in April after admitting a careless driving charge, but sentence was deferred until yesterday to allow for DVLA checks.

However, when Morrison appeared in the dock, he advised the court he had not arranged any legal representation.

Sheriff Peter Anderson refused to accept Morrison’s guilty plea on the grounds he had not sought proper advice before tendering it.

The sheriff told the pensioner, of Land Street in Buckie, that he was at risk of losing his licence and urged him to appoint a lawyer ahead of his next court appearance in July.
